OUR FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dr Peter Saidu Turay
Corporate Leader in Climate Change Abatement & Agri‑Environmental Sustainability Innovation
Dr. Peter Saidu Turay is a distinguished corporate leader in climate change abatement, sustainable development strategy, and agri‑environmental innovation.
As the Founder and Executive Director of The Agrienviron Group, he has spent more than three decades shaping transformative environmental solutions across Africa, Europe, and the United Kingdom. His work bridges science, policy, and enterprise—positioning him as a trusted adviser to governments, international organisations, and private‑sector institutions seeking resilient, low‑carbon development pathways.
A trained Agronomist, Environmental Scientist, and Integrated Natural Resources Management Expert, Dr. Turay has led major national reforms and climate governance initiatives. His leadership was instrumental during his tenure as Agriculture Technical Adviser to the Government of Sierra Leone, where he designed the country’s first National REDD+ Strategy Programme—a landmark achievement in Sierra Leone’s environmental history.
The programme was adopted by UNDP and FAO, peer‑reviewed by the World Bank for readiness financing, and enabled Sierra Leone’s accession to the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). Under his guidance, the REDD+ programme attracted €5 million in seed funding from the Government of Ireland through the EU (2010/2011), catalysing the country’s early forest‑carbon readiness efforts.
In 2019, Dr. Turay further advanced Sierra Leone’s global climate profile by submitting a revised version of the national REDD+ programme, co‑designed with members of The Agrienviron Group, to the MIT CoLab International Contest on Development Pathways for Least Developed Countries. His submission earned a Semi‑Finalist Award, recognising the programme’s innovation, scientific rigour, and potential to transform climate‑resilient development in LDCs.
Dr. Turay has also served as an influential member of the African Group of Negotiators within the UNFCCC, representing the interests of Least Developed Countries in global climate negotiations. His advisory contributions to the Coalition for Rainforest Nations helped shape international frameworks for forest conservation, carbon finance, and climate‑resilient development.
His academic foundation includes a PhD and MSc in Agriculture/Agronomy from the Peoples’ Friendship University in Moscow, specialising in tropical crop production and soil management. He later undertook postdoctoral research in Climate Science (Global Carbon Fluxes) at King’s College London and Agroforestry at the University of Reading.
He also holds a PGCE (FE) from the University of Greenwich, underscoring his commitment to education and capacity building.
Under his leadership, The Agrienviron Group—founded in 1993 and incorporated in 2004—has evolved into an international environmental catalyst, delivering sustainable solutions across agriculture, food security, climate resilience, biodiversity, and environmental governance.
His work is characterised by strategic foresight, scientific rigour, and a deep commitment to empowering communities and institutions to thrive within a greener global economy.
Dr. Turay’s professional journey reflects a rare blend of technical expertise, policy influence, and entrepreneurial vision. He continues to champion innovative, science‑driven approaches to climate action and sustainable development, positioning Agrienviron as a leading partner for governments, development agencies, and private‑sector actors committed to environmental excellence.
